Future-Proofing ASCs: ERAS, Non-Opioid Pain Management, and the Economics of Outpatient Surgery

AzASC Essentials Webinar | Presented by Pacira

As ASCs take on higher-acuity procedures driven by site-of-care migration, leaders must balance clinical excellence with operational efficiency and financial sustainability. Variability in perioperative workflows, pain management, and discharge readiness can impact throughput, patient experience, and downstream costs.

This session explores how ERAS® principles and non-opioid pain management strategies can be adapted to the ASC setting to standardize care, improve patient flow, and support consistent same-day discharge. Attendees will gain practical implementation insights tailored to ambulatory environments—including staffing models, anesthesia considerations, and rapid turnover demands.

Through real-world examples, this program also examines the operational and financial implications of perioperative pathway design, including impacts on unplanned admissions, PACU utilization, patient experience, and revenue cycle performance.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify operational risks associated with higher-acuity ASC procedures and explain how ERAS® reduces variability and improves throughput.

  2. Describe practical strategies for implementing ERAS and non-opioid pain management in ambulatory settings.

  3. Understand how perioperative pathway design influences efficiency, admissions risk, and financial performance.

Presented By

Kim Duggan, MHA, BSN, RN, CNOR

Kim brings more than 25 years of perioperative experience and specializes in implementing ERAS® and perioperative medicine frameworks that improve quality, reduce variability, and enhance patient experience. She has led ERAS expansion across 17 service lines and supported the transition of complex procedures to the ASC setting, generating significant operational improvements and multimillion-dollar cost savings.
